Philosophy

ePortfolio Guidelines for Philosophy: Your professional philosophy is your view of the field of LIS and how you fit into that field. You will need to speak both broadly about the LIS field and specifically to the unique role of a school librarian. Your philosophy must:

  • Be based on knowledge of diverse communities, diverse learning styles, the physical and intellectual abilities and needs of all learners, and lifelong learning.

  • Include specific examples from experience or future application in school librarianship focused on the roles of a school librarian to include leadership, teaching, and program management, with explicit connections to the National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries (please be careful to reference this, and not the ALA-AASL-CAEP School Librarian Preparation Standards) and the ways in which the school library can impact student achievement within current educational practices.

  • Reference examples from your experience and coursework to demonstrate how you will be as a professional and how you will contribute to the contexts and communities which you will be working with in the future.

Your philosophy should not be an embedded document. Include your philosophy statement on the webpage.
